There are many ways to learn jazz styles and improvisation. These are two books I use to facilitate learning:

Elements of the Jazz Language for the Developing Improvisor

A comprehensive book on jazz analysis and improvisation. Elements used in jazz improvisation are isolated for study: they are examined in recorded solos, suggestions are made for using each element in the jazz language, and specific exercises are provided for practicing the element.

Rubank Advanced Method: Saxophone

An outlined course of study designed to follow the elementary and intermediate levels of any instructional method, the Rubank Advanced Methods are considered to be one of the gold standards of advanced instrumental study.

ABOUT CHRIS BENAVIDEZ

As a youth, Chris Benavidez won numerous awards for music including The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, 1st Chair - Tenor Saxophone at The All State Jazz Band (1998), The Lester D. Felton Scholarship for Music, and The Carpenter Family Scholarship for Jazz. In college, Chris worked extensively with the world renowned Bassist, Joel DiBartolo (Bassist for The Tonight Show Band under Doc Severinsen, The Buddy Rich Big Band, and Vocalist Carmen McRae). During this same time, Chris joined the straight ahead jazz group, The Giant Steps Jazz Band. As a member of Giant Steps, Chris worked the bars and night clubs of Northern Arizona for about a decade (2002 to 2012). During that same time, Chris and other NAU (Northern Arizona University) graduates formed a new group. The band was a tribute to Composer/Bassist Charles Mingus. The name of the group was Pithecanthropus Erectus. The bombastic group included 4 or 5 horns and a rhythm section. All of the music was written by Charles Mingus. Currently, Chris is working with Sans Pagaie (http://www.livemusicguy.com/instrumentaljazzband.php), in Phoenix, Arizona. The band released their first album during the Fall of 2016.

Lessons are $60 an hour and meetings are normally held twice a month.
